JENNY HALL - GOING DOWN TOWN
14 July – 22 August

St Kilda Road - Jenny Hall

Jenny Mai Hall's art practice explores the human condition voyeuristically within the context of 'the everyday'. The prints in this exhibition are images of people negating the busy streets of Melbourne. Although the city streets are busy there is a sense of detachment and isolation. The prints are all original prints of a limited edition. This means all the prints have been printed in a traditional manner using printers ink and a manual printing press. The prints are pulled from either a carved wooden or lino block or etched onto a metal plate. Jenny Mai Hall is a Graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Printmaking) at the Victorian College of the Arts.

Her prints, paintings and videos have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at various galleries in and around Melbourne. In 2006 her work was exhibited in 'Hatched-Australian Graduate Exhibition' at (PICA) Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, W.A. and also that year exhibited in a group exhibition at Geidai University, Tokyo, JAPAN. She was selected to exhibit in the Burnie Print Prize 2007 at Burnie Regional Gallery, TAS. Her work has been published in the journal, Griffiths Review-Spring 2006

SEBASTIAN NICHOLAS

BURST AND BLOOM

3 June – 11 July

Sunday all day - Sebastian Nicholas

Burst and Bloom is an enchanting new series of work by Canadian born local Belgrave artist Sebastian Nicholas. Drawings and paintings in this exhibition feature the Bunnyman character travelling through a series of dreamlike landscapes, interacting with giant cockatoos, monkeys and apes. Sebastian's beautiful and whimsical artwork draws on personal memories and dreams, telling elusive universal stories that are strangely familiar.

'I am interested in the character of the rabbit as the archetypal trickster. During one boyhood stage, I wore a rabbit costume for days on end, enjoying the identity of the Bunny. The Bunnyman figure has resurfaced many times in my work over the years and now has an added depth considering Australia's historical relationship with the rabbit.' - Sebastian Nicholas.

Shep was an adoring dog. Good boy Shep! - Sebastian Nicholas

Burst and Bloom refers to the spontaneous and dynamic impulse that drives a dormant seedling from its shell, through the soil, around stones, and up against the pull of gravity towards the light of the sun.

'The pieces in Burst and Bloom are the result of encouraging and labouring my own artistic impulses into fruition, allowing and making space for them up in the sunlight. Each piece evolves in its own way and it’s always a challenge to accept them and trust that they will grow into a viable artwork.

I have enjoyed returning to drawing figures and have freed myself from the obligation for the scenes to make literal sense. The images are mainly derived from a mixed bag of thoughts, dreams and memories. With all of my work there is a simple fascination with the illusion of an object's volume and its relationship to the space around it.'- Sebastian Nicholas

The Pass - Sebastian Nicholas

Sebastian came to Australia from Canada in 1998 and has lived in the Dandenong Ranges for nearly 5 years, settling in Belgrave. Sebastian completed his Masters in Creative Arts Therapy at RMIT in 2005 and is currently working in community arts therapy in Ferntree Gully. Sebastian has exhibited widely in Canada and across Australia.

STEVEN FIRMAN
A Bird In The Hand
4 March – 11 April

A Bird in the Hand is an exhibition of painting and screen prints by local artist Steven Firman.

Whilst the paintings are decorative in nature, for the artist the title suggests something more political. A captive bird, one ‘in the hand’, is worth two of those ‘in the bush’. Those of us living in the hills, on the fringe of the suburbs, sometimes have a love hate relationship with our fauna. Whilst we admire their beauty, when cockatoos eat our picket fences and cedar windowsills some demand a cull of the ‘pests’.

Our native parks have for decades encouraged tourist feeding the birds – in the hand – making our picnic spots a must see tourist destination. Now there is a ban on this. The artist aims to raise some questions surrounding this issue – who are the pests? The local fauna, or humans? How much government control do we need around this issue? Is a bird in the bush actually worth two in the hand?

NOAH SYMONS

Paintings, Drawings & Studies 2005-2009
13 January – 28 February

The work in this exhibition revolves around a fascination with the figurative and the
environment; an exploration into colour and form, which spans the last 4 years.

‘Living and working in the hills over the last six years has inspired my art practice, through the peaceful lush surroundings and the warm and friendly workplace of Earthly Pleasures.

The work was influenced by the people around me and my own sense of purpose and place. Other themes explore environment, past memories, present journeys and the human condition.’

Noah Symons recently completed a degree in Fine Art at RMIT. As well as being a visual artist, he is also a musician who performs under the moniker "Great Earthquake". In his musical performances, I utilizes a number of instruments to create soundscapes, organically built up in time, with a strong emphasis on rhythm.

IN THE BEGINNING

Joy Serwylo

1 DECEMBER 2009 – 10 JANUARY 2010

In the beginning fable and religion were inexorably intertwined, causing no end of confusion. They still are.
For this exhibition Joy plays with old bits of paper, biblical excerpts and the idea of religion and fantasy in today's unreal world. Some excavating, some reconstructing, tearing and drawing, some are serious and some are frivolous, but all will be irreverent.
