Burrinja Awarded 'Best Small Museum Victoria, 2010'
Exemplary Public Programs
Burrinja Cultural Centre is delighted to have been awarded The Archival Survival Award for Small Museums, 2010 by Museums Australia (Vic).
Executive Officer Ross Farnell says everyone at Burrinja is totally ‘over the moon' about the award: “For an independent cultural organisation to win best small museum in Victoria is no small feat. It is a fabulous peer acknowledgement of the hard work and effort that goes into producing a prodigious output of programs, projects, exhibitions and performances from a very small team.”
You find read more about this award at About Burrinja.

BILL HENSON:
early works from the MGA Collection
Until 26 September 2010
Bill Henson: early works from the MGA Collection provides audiences with the opportunity to view some of the most powerful and beautiful photographs made by one of Australia's best-known contemporary photographers. This exhibition features twenty-nine exquisitely printed examples from many of Henson's major series from the 1970s through to the early 1990s, all drawn from Monash Gallery of Art's (MGA) collection.
Passionate discussions in Australia, especially the media, about Henson's work and what it says about the nature of art are ongoing. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity for local audiences to experience the diversity and complex materiality of Henson's work first hand, unhindered by the distortions of reproduction.

GENTLY DOES IT
Jenny Reddin
25 August - 26 September
Many of the recent works in this exhibition have an abstract landscape feel, while also suggesting partially buried bodies, torsoes suspended in space, almost concealed to create tension and mystery. Jenny uses a combination of techniques and materials to create beautiful textures and contrasts, building up the surface of the canvas by applying layer upon layer of whisper thin washes of transparent colour.
When asked about her inspiration, Jenny said, “The landscapes are very much about where I live and the drama I see around me – the explosion of the sunrise every morning over the hill; gale force winds ripping 100 year out trees out of the ground; new life in spring. They are also about the sensuousness and flow of the hills and valleys. I have always seen figures in the landscape”.
Jenny and her family survived the Feb 7th bushfires last year and saved their home and Jenny’s studio.

THEATRE
DAMIAN CALLINAN
The Cave to the Rave
Saturday September 11
The Cave to the Rave takes us from the earthen floor of prehistoric man to the polished parquetry of modern dance, with a few side steps and knee slides along the way.
It’s a dance class for comedy beginners, intermediate and advanced.
By the end of the session you will have learnt that it’s not a good idea to crowd surf at a wiggles concert; understand why women dance in a circle around their handbags and learn that asking someone to dance in a lift is awkward even if there is music playing.
Damian’s highly choreographed tributes to suspiciously funded fringe movement ensembles and 80s film clips and will have you laughing and wanting to dance with him. Please, form an orderly line.
“One of the best shows on offer…deserving of the wildest of applause.”
Herald Sun
